Avoiding dental root canal treatment (Endodontics): Advice and best practices.

Dental root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a procedure that is often necessary to save an infected or severely damaged tooth. However, most patients would prefer to avoid having to undergo this procedure if possible.

At Les Cours Dental Center , we are here to guide you during your recall exams towards better dental health. Our goal is to help you prevent situations where extensive treatment such as a root canal would be necessary. In this article, we'll explain what root canal treatment is, why it's necessary, and how to care for your teeth to avoid it.

What is dental root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that involves removing the nerve that is in a canal in the root of the tooth, then cleaning and sealing the inside of that canal to prevent future infections. This procedure is often necessary following a tooth crack, a tooth fracture or when the dental pulp is invaded by bacteria due to deep untreated decay. If root canal treatment is not done on time, it can lead to severe pain, infection, or even tooth loss.

How to avoid needing root canal treatment?

During your regular dental visits, our professionals will carefully examine the condition of your teeth and identify any early signs of pathology using x-rays.

It is not because we do not have pain that we do not need to treat the tooth: An early cavity does not hurt, and pain is a sign that the cavity has become deep.

It is recommended to see your dentist at least twice a year but also:

●    Avoid sugary and acidic foods: Foods high in sugar and acid promote the formation of cavities. Try to limit your intake of these foods and rinse your mouth with water after eating them

●    Practice good oral hygiene: Regular brushing and flossing are essential to remove plaque and food debris that can cause cavities. Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily.

●    Avoid delaying treatments: If your dentist recommends a filling or other treatment, do not delay the procedure. Untreated cavities can get worse quickly, eventually requiring root canal treatment.

●   Pay special attention to cracked teeth: Cracked teeth can allow bacteria to enter the dental pulp. If you have pain while chewing, your tooth may be cracked. See your dentist immediately so they can assess the situation.

Wear a bite plate: If you grind your teeth or have any signs or symptoms, your dentist will recommend a bite plate. It can help prevent tooth cracks that may require root canal treatment.

●   Wear a mouthguard during contact sports: If you play contact sports, wearing a mouthguard can help prevent tooth fractures that could require root canal treatment.
